Believing God is powerful means that we know he is in charge of what’s happening; things are not arbitrary or out of his control.
He is capable of both helping us and changing things. Much of our anxiety in waiting is because we forget that “God is able to make all grace abound to you” (2 Corinthians ). Waiting on God for answers to our prayers is one of the most difficult aspects of faith. Everyone must face times of waiting it's not a question of if it will happen.
There are so many scriptures that talk to us about waiting, so we know we will all be called on to wait on the Lord. Waiting on God is a regular refrain in the life of faith. It is an expression of the healthy heart’s desire: “O Lord, we wait for you; your name and remembrance are the desire of our soul” (Isaiah ).
And it is an echo of the unparalleled power and grace of God, “who acts for those who wait for him” (Isaiah ). Waiting on God means going without answers to prayer, wondering why the wicked seem to prosper, and having desires delayed and hope deferred. Anxiety in the believer suggests a lack of faith, and that grieves the Lord (see Matthew ).
One divine attribute that will enable us to patiently wait on God is His sovereignty. The second reveals the secret of this strength. 'God worketh for Him that waiteth for Him.' The waiting on God secures the working of God for us and in us, out of which our work must spring.
The two passages teach the great lesson, that as waiting on God lies at the root of all true working for God, so working for God must be the fruit of all. In waiting they would catch the wind of God's Spirit.
